Brokeback Mountain - starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal - director Ang Lee
Brokeback Mountain
Boy, where to start? This is not only the best film of 2005 that I've seen, it's one of the best I've seen period. It's almost Matrix-like due to it's groundbreaking originality and the way it sucks you into this foreign ground. (speaking as a heterosexual female) This movie is a love story, clear and simple. Don't let the whole "gay cowboy" movie deter you for one minute.
It's a slow-paced, quite film. In fact, about halfway through the movie I started to get a little antsy. Then I realized that (at least I believed) it was intentded as a way to further identify with the characters. The story is beautifully crafted, the scenery stunning, and the acting superb.
Ah yes, the acting. Flawless performances and perfect casting make Brokeback the truly special film that it is. From Michelle Williams supporting role of Alma, to Heath Ledger's portrayal of Ennis Del Mar, nobody misses a beat. I could go on for a while about every actor, but instead I'll only touch on Heath Ledger. Where the hell did this guy come from? Damn. The only movie I've seen him in is The Partiot and I don't remember much more than how cute he was. Well, he must have decided to crank the "I'm going to kick the crap out of every male actor in Hollywood" knob up to 10. I'd rather not go into detail about his performance because I fear it will give away a bit of the story. I'll just end it with this. He got screwed out of the Golden Globe award and if he doesn't win best actor from the Academy, I am going to be most upset. Go, go, go see this movie!! ~ Tracy 1/28/06
